Help - fuel delivery problems
I'll try to be as concise as possible. The result of the problem I'm
having with my '86 Quantum (5-cyl of course) is that sometimes the engine
starts sputtering really badly, as in I can't give it more than about
1/8th throttle without it bucking at any RPM under any load.
Things I know:
Bosch KE-Jetronic Fuel Injection
Cold starts are ALWAYS rough due to too rich a mixture
(blue smoke out the rear and a "miss")
Original injectors with 80K miles on the seals - about 170K on the car
About 80K miles on the fuel filter
Things I've noticed:
Most times, the sputtering starts after a significant stint on
the interstate. When I get off and brake or turn then get
back on the gas, it starts.
My fuel pump is original and has hummed significantly for the last year
It has developed from short duration at the beginning to today, lasting
nearly half of my 60 mile commute.
More than one cylinder is affected (I think all are)
Unplug the pressure accumulator (the "E" part of the KE) and it
runs better than ever for the 4 or 5 seconds until it runs
out of fuel
Suspicions:
Fuel pump is giving two week notice (doubtful)
Bad sensor somewhere in the FI
Faulty cold start injector (what specifically would that be?)
I'm 99% sure that it's suffering from an over-rich mixture. Just don't
know what would cause that.
Thanks in advance.
