Water Pump and Timing Belt on 2144cc

It may well be the pump belt.

This is a wierd one.  Drip some Fairy Liquid (liquid detergent) onto the belt, 
then some water.  If the noise stops - it's the belt.  Cheaper than a new 
pump.  The belt was a subject of debate here a while ago - a _new_ belt should 
be just tight enough to be truned through 90 degrees with finger and thumb.  An 
old one refitted - a little looser but not much.
 
The question is - do German mechanics have calibrated fingers?
