Interesting that this was costly for you... there is a shop about 30 miles
from me (shop is in Roanoke, VA) that does _all_ their wheel balancing on
the car rather than putting the wheels on a machine. They do a respectable
job, and charge little more than most places charge for balancing on the
machine.
I haven't taken my Audi in for balancing yet, as it's not been a problem
since I bought the car in February, but I have taken previous cars there.
I find it well worth the extra drive and minimal extra $, since the results
are invariably better than machine balancing. They also let you watch, so
I can see when they spin the wheels up on the car whether it's vibrating or
not, and they usually explain any unusual vibrations to you after they
solve them.
