My Haynes manual says that attempts to fabricate this tool out of pipes 
failed completely.  I used a big Stilson Wrench (one of those things with 
backward facing teeth that closes its jaws when being turned).  It left 
teeth marks, but did the job.  I took the strut out and removed the spring 
to make access easier.  I did the usual trick of getting my wife to stand on 
the arm of the strut to stop it from turning.
