FWIW - I had a VW Passat CL5 in 1983 (Audi I5 JS engine) that was used to
support roadshows all over Germany. It had a 4+E gearbox, and the owner's
manual stated clearly that the maximum speed given was for FOURTH gear, not
fifth.
It spent many, many hours in fourth gear hauling just as fast as it would. In
fact, at top speed, you had to let _OFF_ the throttle a little bit to get the
maximum 130-odd mph. I spent _hours_ at that speed in the thing.
It still wasn't using any oil or making any noises when I traded it in at
90000km.
You'll do an Audi engine a lot more damage in too high a gear at 3000rpm than
you will in the right gear at 5000rpm.
