more on cq heating problem

I have heat in both hoses at the
firewall, presumably to and from the heater core.
I'm leaning more and more towards a flap (one of them)
being open and letting cold air in.

Christian told me in an email that he had a problem with
the a/c recirc flap, and that he stuck in a piece of 
pvc pipe to prevent the flap from closing all the way.
Could this be the problem?  I'm not familiar enough
with the internals of this system, and sadly, the Bently
sucks (I used to have the same one for my 1988 90, and
it was the same back then too!)
