Good overview.   If you have a few extra bucks, the best IMNSHO is a TIG 
welder because it will do everything that the MIG will do (albeit a 
little slower) but it also does Aluminium (Regards, Gross) and stainless 
with no more than a filler rod and tungsten change (about 2 minutes, 
MAX.)   TIG is also very articulate - you can do very fine welding much 
more easily than with MIG, stick or gas.  TIG is also much easier to do 
thin wall stuff like exhaust work because you have control over the 
current with a foot pedal.
