87 5KQ Air Intake SCOOP??

Hi to all,
Was looking at my 87 5KQ's air intake system.
Noticed that 2 twin tubes end up horz. in front of the grill.
QUESTION...... Has anyone made a homemade Scoop (probably rectangle on the
grill)
to funnel more cool air into the engine.  If so then what results did you
have such as MPG 
& get up & go,  I do a lot of Highway driving & live in south Mississippi
where it is HOT
& Humid most of the time.
