I'm actually using DOS email code (KA9Q) running under OS/2 Warp.
It's fast, highly automated (using REXX) and I don't have to sit in
front of the damn thing like a trained monkey telling it what to
do next all the time. It uses about 2% of a 486/33 which is also
the main fileserver and backup server for my home LAN. Anything not
deleted by nightfall is parsed out by a REXX application and indexed
by Magellan, so I have keyword search capabilities for all my email.
Microsoft's paradigm requires me to access files by name and not by
content. This is not how I work.
MIME (B64, UUENCODE) is handled in flight. Audio, video and still
images are filtered out and discarded during downloads.
I get through around 500 emails a day, the majority being work-related.
I just couldn't do that with a GUI. And I couldn't afford the bandwidth
if they were all in HTML or MIME-encoded.
I make an exception for MIME when it's used to send me something in
French or German using an 8-bit character set. MIME from a US address
is likely to be deleted before being read.
