Curses! Foiled Again! (MC vs 3B Fuel Pump)
There are two fuel pumps available for my '91 200q; the 3B pump is half
the price of the MC engine pump, but has a different mounting system than
the standard tripod mount used in the MC fuel tanks.
Armed with a new Bosch pump for my MC engine, I sallied forth this
afternoon to replace my existing noisy unit before it fails. initially, all
went well (too well). Lots of hose in the tank, so there was no problem
pulling up the sending unit and disconnecting it.
The first premonition of impending doom came when I gazed into the tank
and spotted ... no tripod mount. Hmmm, this looks like the 3B mount shown in
the Bentley. Off to the basement for a reference check. Yes indeedy, my MC
engined car is equipped with the 3B fuel pump mounting system. Bentley says
tool 3214 is required to remove said pump. Bentley is correct. I twisted the
mount with a bar through the slots until the plastic creaked, but it
wouldn't budge. Rats! Put it all back together.
I assume I can use the cheaper 3B pump since I have the mounting system
for it. Does anyone know if there is a significant difference in the fuel
delivery and pressure of these pumps? The fuel delivery graphs in the
Bentley show the MC pump having a 760cc/min delivery at 12V vs 660 cc/min
for the 3B, although I would expect the 3B engine would require more fuel.
Has anyone come up with a method of removing these pumps without using tool
3214?
TIA
