Re: Pro Rally in the US is small potatoes

There are some big changes in the works in the rally scene in the US.

First there is the advent of rallycross type events, which will
get alot of cross-over from the popular solo type events. Very
similar in format, but rallycross is less hard core and more about
having a good time (it's still young). This is the feeder program
for the SCCA racing which is really club racing, not pro racing.

Secondly, we are moving to the FIA format of having superstages or
rallycross type events at a central location, where spectating both
in person and via TV is a realistic proposition. There was a crowd
at the last two rallycross events I went to. People loved them!

Thirdly, true pro racing IS coming to the US inspite of the SCCA.
The American RallySport Group is promoting a series of four races
with 5 figure prize lists with television packages, casino support,
and true superstage / rally / rally raid formats. The first event
of a planned four event series will be this fall from Reno to Laughlin,
and an international group of competitors is expected, including all
the Japanese and Jamacian guys who showed up for Rim or the World earlier
this month. With real money to be had many desert racer types will cross
over as well.

For better or worse an SUV class will be included, making this a clear
break from the normal Pro Rally event run by SCCA. You may like
or dislike this format, but it will be real racing with real money and
real support from manufacturers. Obviously you can't repeat exactly
what works in Europe or Asia and expect to succeed in the US.

Don't believe it? Ray Hocker, who founded the Rim of the Wolrd rally
is one of the principles, and he is a pretty straight shooter, so I tend
to believe it. It could all fall apart, but it seems to be firming up.
