EM Welding

Guys,

I "successfully" welded my cracked one-piece exhaust manifold last
night. I did all of the typical preparation steps like drilling out the
ends of the cracks, grinding out a channel along the crack, and I used
special filler rod for cast iron. I used my TIG welder set to a fairly
high current (about 120 amps) and made several passes. The only problem I
encountered was on the final passes. The impurities from the surface
seemed to float into the weld, making it bubble a little on the last pass.
I think next time I will clean off the surface 1/2" or so each side of the
weld area to prevent that from happening. It looks good though, so I'm
going to get the mounting surface planed and put it on the car to see how
long it lasts.

Looks to me like it _can_ be done. It may not last as long as a
new EM, but then it doesn't cost as much either.
