Welcome back, Dan.

As to why the A4 might justify costing a few grand more... just go
sit in the cars and look around.  I think the reason will become
apparent.  Yes, the A4 and new Passat share a lot of the same parts and
mechanicals, but they are decidedly *not* "the same car".

Whether that difference is worth it to your friend, she would have to
decide for herself.
