v8 mods

Hi,
   About 4 months ago I asked the list whether I could swap a 4.2 v-8
for a 3.6 in my 1990 V-8. At that time some of the listers said it would
be possible with a new harness and a whole lot of trouble. Some people
suggested that a new chip would be a better way to go. Unfortunately, even
though I saved the email it must have been on my old office machine
because I can't find it. 
   Does anybody know what chips are available and what they'll do? Since I
now have to fix the damned thing and even the Audi dealer doesn't want to
take a V8 in trade for the 100 because they lie on the lot for too long, I
figured I might as well customize it so that I can enjoy it. Too bad the
consensus is that I can't dump the slushbox for a 5 speed too.
