Used to own an 83 5kt.  Busted the engine (don't ask!) and replaced it
with a low miles 84 5kt motor.  I think it hooked up pretty
starightforwardly - I didn't hear any complaints from the mechanic.  It
gained a few, maybe 10 hp, and I'm sure we weren't taking advantage of
some of the newer engine's capabilities by using the 83 sensors,
harness, etc.  Just a data point...

PS also paid about $1200 once to get the auto rebuilt.  A 4 speed would
have kicked butt.
