Thanks to Dan and Stott for the suggestions on the exhaust flange. I asked at the local dealer today and they do have flanges which fit over the pipe and are secured by a nut and bolt on either side. They didn't have a part number since they buy them in (FWIW the one I bought was made in Canada). I'm sure they are available from good exhaust (muffler) shops, Audi wanted $30 (Cdn) which is about $10 US with the current exchange ;)

p.s. Audi wanted $32 for one of the two cat brackets the other one is $9. A good friend who works there recommended buying two of the $9 ones. The second one only has to be bent slightly to fit on the "wrong" side.
