Simulating "closed door"

How does one "fool" the system, to allow you to use the key in the dr side
mechanism to view the lock mechanisms workings while peering into the interior
of the door (yes, panel off) while open? While trying to find lock-unlock
problem, I've been trying to watch the mechanisms work while twisting the key
in the tumbler of the dr side handle-door open. Of coarse, this is not
normally possible since the mechanism senses that the dr side door is open. I
tried closing the "catch" on the door (that usually grabs the post) and
pushing the elect.push switch on the pillar. The car still knows that the door
is open.
