Clutch replacement - ugly story

The 86 4KCSQ started to make strange noises a few weeks ago. The
problem was diagnosed as a bad throw-out bearing. As replacement is
labour intensive (7.2 hrs flat rate), it seemed a good idea to do
clutch and pressure plate at the same time. I've had a number of VW
clutches replaced thru the years and have come to the conclusion that
one should use Orig Equip, Sachs, or Luk. On that assumption, I
ordered a Sachs Kit. When the replacement was made and the car was
ready to roll - IT DIDN'T - slippage. All adjustments made - checked
and re-checked, same problem. Parts distributor said bring it back -
we will replace it. They did - different looking box, but same part
number. In it goes - YEP! same problem. Mechanic is on the line with
tech support - they say that it is the correct part - can't tell what
is wrong. Mechanic feels that he has done the job correctly and has
bad or wrong parts parts - proceeds to put original parts back in
(Using a NAPA bearing - mic'ed out the same as Sachs). Clutch now
works okay. To me it is obvious that one of the following occurred;
  1. The part was cross-referenced incorrectly
  2. The parts were mis-labeled
  3. The materials were defective
  4. MARS and VENUS were not in conjunction
You may well imagine what the labour bill is for this mess. What I am
looking for is additional support for my re-imbursement claim. Has
anyone BTDT? Does anyone have cross-ref info? If so - what does it
say and when was it dated?
Help!
