Brake Pad Wear Warning on Autocheck - A100

Has anyone experienced premature operation of this, well before the pads
are worn anywhere near the embedded wires ?
This happened once, when the (Pagid) pads were less than half-worn, but
I changed them to remove the irritation and the crying of wolf.
But this has now recurred with the new ones (Ferodo) which started this
when only about one-fifth worn.
I seem to remember this happening once on my previous Audi 100 but
changing the pads cured it.
Could it be anything to do with the asbestos-free composition of pads
nowadays being conductive enough to make the circuit with the embedded
wires ?
