I think this falls under the category of don't try this at home. I have
heard of plenty of cops getting hit hiding behind a car door. The door
may change the trajectory of the bullets just as water can, but the
bullets get through nontheless. 

Furthermore, from speaking with a former WWII fighter pilot, shooting a
fuel tank that is not self sealing can and will make it explode. He had
personal experience with this in the Pacific where the Japanese planes
did not have self sealing fuel tanks as the US ones did. They often
exploded into big fireballs just like in the movies. B-17's had a bad
habit of exploding on landing as well.
