EFI 5KCSTQ gets new brakes (long)
Guys,
My 5KCSTQ is still for sale. I really want to get a newer car
like an '89 200TQ or maybe even a '91 200TQ 20V or if I can persuade my
wife, an S4. The sooner one of you buys this car, the sooner I can get a
newer car. :-)
I installed a new rear wheel bearing, new rear camber link, and
new brakes (rotors and pads) today. It now has the late '89 ATE single
piston calipers on the front with a set of Performance Friction pads and
ATE Power Stop rotors with that "atomic swirl" groove. Rear rotors are
regular rotors from GPR with Repco Deluxe pads. The system seems to work
very well. Its smooth and quiet again. Once they are bedded in and I
bleed the brakes again, I'll let you know how well it works.
BTW, I drove a bunch of cars last week at our competitive ride. My
own personal general concensus was that the BMWs (328i and 528i) were the
best sedans there, while the A4 was almost as good at a much more
attractive price. The A6, as ugly as it is, was a _very_ nice driving car.
A couple surprises though. The new Saab 9-3 and 9-5 were junk! Very
flimsy, eccentric, and weird. Noisy and rough too.
The other big surprise to me was the new Volvo S80 T6 (did I get that
right?). That is a _fine_ automobile that was nearly on a par with the
BMW 5 series. If they had given that car rwd, it might give the 540i a
run for its money. The transverse, inline 6-cylinder, twin turboed engine
was very interesting!
All of the Toyota products were excellent. That included the Camry
(lovely 3.0 V6), Solara, ES300, LS400, and RX300 (cool machine:-). They
fall more into the "appliance" classification IMHO due to their fwd
(yeah, I know, the LS and RX are rwd and awd), but they did everything
_very_ well.
The Mercedez A-class was goofy looking, but it drove quite well, and
actually had a decent amount of power.
I was reminded that even in such lofty company, the Catera was a fine
driving car. I don't care for slushboxes, but at least the Catera has
rwd, and big meaty tires, so it handled with as much confidence as the
BMWs and Audis. That Opel Omega chassis is very well done. If it just
had another 50 hp, it could be downright fun! :-)
Well, I guess I've been rambling. This has become quite long. :-)
