The reason we never got the TDIs until recently was the fact that the folks
in the USA won't buy diesel cars ... perhaps thanks to GM's diesel passenger
car offerings in the '70's ... 

I suppose the fact that diesel fuel costs about the same as gasoline might
be a factor as well.  

Another interesting note is that we will likely be seeing TDI (or at least
DI) gasoline engines in the near future.  The advantages of DI for gasoline
engines is that you don't have to fill the cylinder with a homogeneously
stoichiometric mixture ...
