The liquid is quite greasy, liquid and brownish in colour.  The amount of leak
varies with the distance that I drive.  There doesn't seem to be an
appreciable loss in oil levels for the engine, but I'm not sure how to check

Sounds like brake fluid from a clutch master cylinder starting to fail to
me...

Take a look up underneath with a flashlight and you should be able to see the
source. HTH
