re Retry: Thanks!! (and another question) re: antilock problems after service
Carlyle Fitzgerald <clfitz@inetone.net> writes, in part:
----------------------------------------
To refresh everyone's memory, I had the wheel bearings and one cv shaft
replaced on my '88 Quattro 90. There was no Audi dealer where I was (in
Virginia) so it was done at a generic auto shop. Afterward, the
antilock system didn't work; the light stays on, antilock pulses at
extremely slow speeds, no antilock at all at normal speed.
Anyway, I managed to get a day off work this week to look at it. I can't
see a thing wrong, except *possibly* one: There is a "window" (for lack
of a better term) on the housing for the cv shaft where it attaches to
the hub. The cv shaft splines are visible through this window. I
couldn't see an equivalent on the driver's side, which was not replaced
(according to the mechanic, it had been replaced fairly recently.)
Could this window be misaligned, rendering the splines on the cv shaft
invisible to the sensor and causing my problems?
----------------------------------------------
I don't recall a "window." There should be a sensor on each side that fills
a hole that "looks" at a spline ring (about 3 inches in diameter). The
teeth are a square wave and have a pitch of a few mm.
