Climate control box, 5000 - check this!
Good old type 44 climate control went into default mode (defrost only), so
I opened it up to see what's wrong this time.
All solenoids rattle and click correctly, all solder joints good, but
what's this??
On all three climate boxes in my "stash", one of the vacuum hoses is TOO
LONG and rubs against the heat sink for the 8 volt regulator (large, flat
transistor with metal fin on it, opposite end from the motor).
Examination of removed board shows that this rubbing has broken the solder
joints to the board on *all three* climate boxes.
Cure: Shorten the offending hose by one full inch (!), press back onto
solenoid spigot, making sure it no longer rubs against anything electronic.
Resolder the broken solder joints on the PC board.
(Still in default mode, there are "other problems" - but this is a definite
weak point and should be checked ANY time you are in the CC box, and
re-plumbed if necessary. One of the "other problems" is the manifold inlet
vacuum tap, a plastic tube pressed into the throttle body, has fallen out!
RTV is hardening now . . .)
