Actually, they don't. You can remove the cover separately, at least on my
'87 5KT, BTDT many, many times. The jumper post looks like a much better
idea, though.

In fact, this is a single bolt with two sets of flats machined. Just get a
13mm socket and unscrew it. Take note that the metal bracket it's secured
to is not strong enough to withstand the torque. I detached the bracket
from the frame (the jumper post to bracket screws were frozen), then
wearing a thick mechanic's glove held the jumper post in hand while undoing
the bolt.
