Alas, it only works if they don't have FAKE plates. Here goes a little
story from the other side of the pond :-)
My uncle was driving his Ford Sierra (BTW, surprisingly fast for a 120hp
car, we once raced and I had trouble losing it in my 5KT) at one of the
back roads approx. 50kms from Warsaw when suddenly out of the bushes at the
side of the road jumps out a SUV with bull bars and hits my uncle's car in
right front fender. Needless to say, there's none damage to the SUV, but
the poor Ford has crushed radiator. The SUV occupants are two "young
mafioso" type guys (20-something years old, well fit, leather jackets,
short haircut) and their "bimbo" type GFs. They all start to _yell_ at my
uncle that he should "watch it as he drives the car" etc. The SUV driver
finally agrees to submit his personal data (he shows his ID, car
registration and insurance policy) and also mentions "don't worry about
this radiator thing, I own a radiator repair shop at <address here> and can
fix this for you". My uncle decides to take an official way though and
contacts jerk's insurance company. There he finds out that:
- There's no such insurance policy
- There's no such car
- There's no such person (!!!)
Fake driver ID, fake vehicle registration, fake insurance policy.
The insurance company decided to investigate and found the jerk and his SUV
in the radiator shop he mentioned. However, when presented with claims, he
demanded the name and address of the person who filed the claim (my uncle).
Needless to say, when my uncle learned that a guy with fake identity wants
to know his address, he decided to repair the car at his own cost - very
wise IMO.
