Is the solenoid seeing a full 12-13V to switch onto the starter?  The
fat wires bring the main current for the starter, check the voltage,
then backtrack up them to find the groaty connection if low.  Check the
ground as well as the hot side.

Good BTDT with Brasil Auto in E. San Jose.  Know their way around Audis
esp. older ones.
