Jim Haseltine made the similar, somewhat grim suggestion.  I haven't yet
done the obvious test for that, which is to pop the hood and have my
wife turn the key while I watch to see if the crank pulley is turning. 
Or the almost equally obvious thing, which is to remove the two 6mm
Allen key bolts holding on the cam cover and see if the belt is intact.

One can only hope that the '83 engine, said to be non-interference,
really *IS* non-interference and that since the failure occurred at
idle, nothing really bad has happened...
