Re: Heat Cycling New Pads?
I just installed Mintex (Red Box) pads on my 84 4000q on Friday, together
with new Brembo cross-drilled rotors. I heat cycled them by dragging the
brake pedal successively while driving in third gear at about 30-35 mph. I
did this about 5 or 6 times, with the last time or two enough so that I
could just smell the brakes getting hot. Then I drove another 15 minutes or
so without touching the brakes so that they could cool down. On Saturday
and Sunday, I took the car to the local road course for a 2-day track event.
I drove hard and really hammered the brakes. (The car was really impressive
with the new H&R springs and other suspension bits.) But with 2 days of
really high performance driving (and this was really driving at the limit
for about 250 miles), the pads had worn almost completely down!! So,
despite what the vendor told me, I have concluded that the Mintex pads are
really too soft for serious track duty. I will probably replace this week
with either Hawk or Porterfield pads.
