RE: Source for Bose components

Get this repaired ASAP! There are several cases where this sort of problem
has resulted in the speaker unit catching fire! As long as you don't turn
the radio on no power will be applied to the speaker, so there isn't
anything to worry about. It is my understanding that the units that have
caught fire are ones in the rear deck, but I'd imagine that the door units
might have a similar problem.

Frankly, I'm surprised to hear that the dealer pointed you elsewhere ... you
can get rebuilt units from the Audi parts department. AAMOF from the P/N
you gave it appears that the unit that is in there was a rebuild. Another
possible source would be to check at Autobahn of New Hampshire 800.350.4590
or DADS 800.321.DADS to see what their price on the units would be.

Since I too have a car that is susceptible to this malfunction, if you do
choose to get a replacement from a recycler, I'd be interested in getting
your old unit to try to investigate the source of the problem. There is
some chance I will be able to repair the unit, and if so I can ship it back
to you for the cost of the parts and shipping.

Removing the door panel isn't that much different from other Audis, once you
get the armrest off. I think that Chris Miller's page has some details on
how this is done.
