Piston rings
- Offset gaps 120°:
- Marking "TOP" points towards piston crown
- Remove and install with piston ring pliers
- Checking side clearance
- Checking gap
Pistons
Conrod
- Dimensions
- Only renew as a set
- Mark relationship to cylinder at -A- with a punch
- Orientation - marking -B- points to pulley end of engine
Bearing cap, conrod
Bearing cap nut - oil surface lightly
Circlip
- Levering out
Cotter pin
- If tight, warm piston to 60°C
- Install with VAG 207 C
Big end bolt - always replace
Cylinder block
- Checking cylinder bores
- Piston dimensions:
  - WR
  - MB
Big end bearing shells
- Upper shells have oilways - lower shells are plain
- Do not mix used shells
- If present, retaining lugs must engage in recesses
- Measuring backlash
- Check radial play with Plastigage.
