Crankshaft Group - Dismantling and Assembling Engine - 2

13-482 Dismantling and Assembling the Engine - 2

  1. Oil filler cap. If the cap is removed when the engine is running, it should stall instantly. Even pulling the dipstick out may cause a stall if the engine is properly air-tight. Leaks are to be avoided - the gasket in the cap is p/n 059 103 487.
  2. Reinforcing strips. The illustration shows only one of the two.
  3. Gaskets. Ex-factory, most cars were fitted with cork gaskets and a separate seal over the #1 camshaft bearing. The replacement gasket is neoprene and comes in two forms for studs with and without shoulders. If a cork gasket is removed, the cam cover should be checked for distortion that can be corrected by hammering it between two pieces of hardwood.
  4. Cylinder head. See detailed removal instructions
  5. Camshaft Woodruff key. If removing the cam sprocket in the car, pack the space below with rags to catch the key if it falls.
  6. Oil filter. Use, e.g., Draper T72/14, Daimler-Benz 103 589 02 09 00 or equivalent oil filter socket. In extreme cases, hammer a screwdriver through the filter.
  7. Oil pickup retainer. Always replace the tab washer p/n 035 115 259.
  8. Sump
  9. Drain plug. Always replace the crush washer N 013 849 2.
  10. 13mm and recessed. Thin-walled socket useful.
  11. Cam cover nuts. Do NOT use stainless.
  12. Camshaft cover.
  13. Cylinder head bolts.
  14. Cylinder head gasket. Marking "Oben" should be uppermost at the front. On MB engines, locate on the two pins on the right of the engine. Clean all surfaces thoroughly. Use no sealant.
  15. Clutch disc. Centering by eye is not difficult - sometimes pear-drop ratchet handles can be used.
  16. Pressure plate.
  17. Locates on pins and tightened cross-wise with 6mm Allen key.
  18. Sump gasket. Clean surfaces thoroughly. Use no sealant.
  19. Sump retaining bolts.
  20. Flywheel cover. Removing this is the best way to observe the front of the flywheel and check the status of the timing pin.
