15-539 Removing and refitting the cylinder head

  1. Some of the cam cover nuts perform other functions, such as securing the front and rear chassis ground straps, the wastegate heat shield, the ignition lead shroud, etc. These nuts are not exposed to corrosion and there is no benefit in replacing them with stainless fasteners.
  2. Reinforcing strips.
  3. Cam cover.
  4. Cam cover gasket. Note that an old factory-fitted gasket may be cork with a separate rubber piece to go over the #1 cam bearing. This should be discarded and a new one-piece neoprene gasket used. This comes in two forms; for shouldered and non-shouldered studs. Be sure to use the correct type. Especially if replacing a cork gasket, check that the cam cover nuts have not been overtightened, dragging the holes down into the cork and effectively bowing up the cam cover between the holes and causing oil leaks with the new gasket. Two pieces of hardwood and a hammer can correct this problem.
  5. Gasket - now shipped as part of 4. above.
  6. Cylinder head bolts - always replace. See notes
  7. Cylinder head. See cylinder head distortion checks
  8. Cylinder head gasket
    • Always renew
    • The word "Oben" should face upwards towards the cylinder head
    • MB engines have two locating lugs for the gasket to hold it in place during assembly. On WR and GV engines, either VAG 3070 or two cut-down old head bolts can be used.
