If the car does not stall when the oil filler cap is off then the
crankcase vent into the intake manifold may be plugged. My '82 Coupe
has a restricting orifice in the hose. American cars have the
infamous PCV valve. Newer Audis must have some similar gizmo. The
crankcase normally has a slight vacuum in it. More openings in the
crankcase increase the engine intake air bypassing the airflow meter,
causing the engine to run too lean for the other control functions to
make up for it.
The crankcase should have at least two hoses connected to it. One
from just after the air filter and one with the restricting device
going to the intake manifold. This creates Positive Crankcase
Ventilation.
