Using relays for driving lights

After reading some of the Quattro traffic about driving lights/higher
power headlights, I was thinking about the specifics of the 'operation'. As
many people have stated, you would need some sort of relay wired to a switch
to turn the lights on and off. The only thing that concerns me, is the actual
switch to relay wiring. Would you need some large value resistor in series
with the switch so you don't accidently fry the wiring you just installed? I
would seem that if you didn't, tons of current would flow through the circut,
and then burn up/burn out your electrical system.
Am I on the right track, or totally wrong?
