Re:Developing Seizures....

In a message dated 96-10-04 11:13:08 EDT, you write:

<< 1) Holding the wheel on
 2) Assuring the rotor will not warp due to uneven tightening
 3) Assuring the lugs will not come loose

my experience tells me they will
not loosen, and they will therefore not fall off. All the criteria for
performance I listed are met. What's more, I know that the lugs
will not lock up. I have no such assurance that cleaning the threads
will asure this - they are still subject to weather and heat. I
grant you that cleaning the threads may be a neat idea, but I doubt
that the other priorities on my time will ever incline me to do so. >>

.... And I understand your argument totally Al... And in the grand scheme
of things prolly not a really big issue, tho I can share that I SAW exactly
what the Laws of Physics dictate "COULD" happen with the addition of A.S. on
lug bolts (and why no racing team or auto manufacturer uses it)... Could
doesn't mean in 20 years it happens to you even once.... However, you are
speaking of physical properties of metals and heat cycles, at the track more
severe than on the road..... Overtorquing lug bolts is prolly more common
than not, and A.S. with a torque wrench prolly doesn't affect the insert
failure as much as an Ingersoll-Rand set on "install"... It does still
affect the release based on heat cycles however, the IR prolly doesn't.....
Lots of folks that use A.S. on their bolts, some that surprise me.....

Your experience tells you that A.S. does not cause wheels to fall off, that
is not mine, or the guy at Waterford (and he used a torque wrench to put
bolts on and Never cleaned them either, lives in OH)..... So the "benefits"
outweigh the risks, and I am anal... OK.... But to recommend that procedure
to anyone on this list, IMO, is a convenience issue, not a safety or a
physics based one..... What about the lister in Arizona (not you, Jeff),
that rarely has rain, never snow, is ambient hot most of the time, is he
doing the right thing by adding A.S.?..... Bottom line is you can skirt the
laws of physics, but you can never beat them, heat cycles are include
here..... Al, Try cleaning the bolts and the holes when you pull the wheels
off, a wire wheel and a drill takes all of 5 minutes, less time than it takes
to get the A.S. off all the "other" things you got it on when you opened the
can..... :~)

..... Anal about my "threads" - scuze the pun
