This one is easy. I too had a 87 5KSQ with a blown out shifter boot. Take
it off, you need to unscrew the shifter knob, then unscrew the base and
remove it from the car. It has a plastic piece around the bottom that has
to be removed, it's two pieces as I remember, the dealer doesn't give you
this piece, you have to fit it to the new one.

Then take it down to the local seamstress or shoe repair and give it to
them for a pattern. There are four panels, two of one pattern, two of
another. It should be very easy for them to make it and stich it together.
Then just attach it back to the base and install! I wish I would of know
that before I paid $90 for a "PLEATHER" (plastic leather) replacement. You
could have a leather one for about $30!
