I tried all kinds of sequences last night and finally had success.  Here's how to do it:

1.  Put 2nd key in car and turn ignition switch on, but don't start engine.
2.  Lower driver window and move driver seat back all the way.
3.  Have driver side door unlocked.
4.  Press down on 'lock' button on remote and hold
5.  While holding remote lock button, move driver seat from back to front.
6.  Still holding, manually lock driver door.
7.  Release remote and you're set.

The car must have been 'enabled' with the Audi tool before we bought it, otherwise, I don't think it works.

It involves locking the door with the door open
and pressing the key button while also pressing the seat position selector
button.  I forget the exact details.
