Sounds like your heater core. BTDT on my '81 5K Diesel. I think that is a
trait of Audi's especially if they have sat dormant for a period of time.
Happened on my '82 as well.

You failed to mention the year of your car. I have an '86 Audi that developed a
hard start problem a while back. Turned out to be the check valve in the fuel.
tank. As I recall, in my case, it would take a solid 20-30 seconds of cranking
before it would fire. With the defective check valve the car basically had to
draw fuel from the tank to the front of the car before it would start. Have you
tried changing your fuel filter? Gray smoke from the tailpipe on a Turbo engine
is not a good sign. Worse case scenario, it could be an indicator that your
Turbo (seals) is about to go or that you have a head gasket problem. Does the
grey smoke appear everytime you start the car? Does it go away after the car
warms up?

Have you checked your (Wide-Open-Throttle) WOT switch?

If this is what I think it i, it may be your front stud on the exhaust
manifold. I believe this is a common problem on older Audi's. The front stud
over time stresses and breaks allowing exhaust gases to leak out between the
manifold and gasket. To fix requires removing manifold and replacing stud. I
have same problem on '86 but never have fixed. Perhaps another lister could
enlighten you more.

Could this be CV Joint problem or possibly front suspension bushing loose?
